Lesser Known Traits That You Should Look for in a Good Therapist
If you read a mainstream article about psychiatrists and
their specialization, you might find a lot of different opinions on what makes
for a good therapist. Some experts consider academic training to be the most
important factor, others that it’s more important to have hands-on experience.
A few therapists will argue that those following Carl Jung’s approach to
psychology are better, while Freudians will disagree.
For those who are less interested in going through the past
100 years of psychiatric history, however, the requirements are far simpler:
·
A good therapist should, first of all, be caring
and open minded. They should never dismiss their patients’ experiences or argue
that a pill should be the ultimate solution to their problem.
·
Psychiatrists and psychologists should be open
to new approaches for treating mental illnesses. This includes meditation and
oriental techniques, as well as modern treatments devised by western medicine.
·
As the famous proverb goes, “physician, heal
thyself!” A good therapist should always be just as open to learning and
bettering him- or herself, just as much as the patient should be open to
listening to the therapist’s advice. No one is above the need for improvement.
By following this simple advice and evaluating potential
therapists based on it, you will find that the best therapists might not always
be the ones with the most expensive services and best degrees, but the ones
that genuinely care about their patients, and are creative and intelligent
enough to recognize the need for a new approach, when it arises.
